Snow White and the Huntsman

2012, Roth Films

First-time director Rupert Sanders should not have been given command of a $170 million production, especially with young Evan Daugherty's screenplay. The result is a muddled mess that wastes the talents of Charlize Theron and Chris Hemsworth. Decent effects could not mask the film's critical underlying faults. But strangely this didn't stop producer Joe Roth from investing in a sequel.

The Huntsman: Winter's War

2016, Roth Films et al

Things go from bad to worse as another first-time director Cedric Nicolas-Troyan (second assistant director for the first film) embarrasses Charlize Theron and Chris Hemsworth with a flakey quasi-spin-off story focusing on the Huntsman's antics both before and after the events of the prior film. Honestly, people should be licensed to take control of projects worth over $100 million; it just barely broke even at the box office.
