Howard the Duck

1986, Lucasfilm

Here's a hot mess from the likes of George Lucas. Although I didn't find it quite as bad as most did, it's still pretty bad. Effects were fairly decent on occasion, but they weren't enough to overcome a fatally flawed script, uneven direction, and a thoroughly unlikeable lead... duck. I was charitable and rated it SBD simply because Jeffrey Jones really gave it his all; indeed, all three principal actors were good, and evidently have no regrets for appearing in the film, although they did find it hard to land jobs for a while afterwards due to the bad press. Lea Thompson, Howard's "girlfriend," even expressed interest in directing a possible reboot, although Marvel did not bite. I'm uncertain whether or not to be surprised that Howard has since acquired a cult following. BTW, Howard made a cameos in both Guardians of the Galaxy films.
