The legendary Ian McKellen tackles the legendary Sherlock Holmes—retired. Trading sleuthing thrills for more studied introspection, Mr. Holmes offers us rather different rewards than we might otherwise expect. Still, it's hard to fully shake the faint whiff of contrivance, as if the film exists merely to offer us these wonderful performances.
