I wasn't going to bother with this one, but a colleague at work twisted my arm. I'm glad she did—I was pleasantly surprised at how enjoyable it was. Guillermo del Toro is a gifted filmmaker with a fantastic eye for the offbeat; as a fan of the comic, he made it his mission to bring it to life, and casting Ron Perlman in the lead was genius. Although it wasn't much of a box office performer, it was a critical success.

Good news: it's 2 for 2 with this sequel, thanks to Guillermo del Toro expert guidance and Ron Perlman's wise-cracking, cat-loving superhero. The plot is a bit more convoluted, and the action a bit more hectic, but not excessively so. There's even a touch of romance to add sweet spice to the mix.
For reasons unfathomable, the franchise was rebooted. And it was universally, mercilessly panned. I didn't even bother.
