Gravity

2009, Esperanto Filmoj et al

Thankfully not quite as self-consciously "great" as Interstellar, Gravity satisfies in countless ways, not the least of which is taking a refreshingly different approach to filmmaking. Although some scenes and effects are a bit overdone, it's generally a skillful, engaging and worthwhile work, and stands as proof you don't need a sprawling, convoluted plot or laser battles to solidly hold one's attention.

It's also remarkable that Sandra Bullock—boldly cast against type—was given an opportunity to carry such a weighty responsibility (sorry, couldn't resist). She tackles the role with remarkable skill and conviction, and plays a terrific foil for George Clooney's irreverence, although I'll confess she does occasionally struggle a wee bit in some of her solo scenes.
