A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum

1966, United Artists

Yes, I know it's a musical, but never mind that. I've always had a soft spot for Zero Mostel, and his turn as Pseudolus could not possibly be bettered by anyone else. Indeed, the entire cast is on the mark, even if Mostel, Phil Silvers and Jack Gilford are a bit long in the tooth—if anything, it adds to the charm; they're clearly pros (no surprise, as Mostel and Gilford reprised their roles from the popular, much-lauded stage play). This film also marked the final appearance of Buster Keaton, the genius behind The General.

"Third time around!"
