Forbidden Planet

1956, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer

Still revered as a groundbreaking film, Forbidden Planet stands as that rare thinking-person's science fiction film, rarer still given its B-movie era. As but one of its many admirable qualities, Robby the Robot wasn't the stereotypical "tin can on legs," instead serving as an intelligent and vital story element. It was also the first film to be set entirely on a distant alien planet. Aside from its dated acting (which is entirely excusable), the only thing I'd fault it for is its annoying, grating electronic music score.
