Flash Gordon

1982, Starling Films et al

Count me in as a member of the large, enthusiastic cult that follows this garish, over-the-top Dino De Laurentiis drug trip. Everything about it "works" perfectly: the casting is spot-on, the performances are appropriately hammy, the sets are excessively gilded, the Queen soundtrack is awesome, and the effects are tuned to just the right level of LSD-laced cheesiness. In hindsight, scriptwriter Lorenzo Semple Jr. thought it was a huge mistake to make Flash Gordon a comedy, but history shows De Laurentiis' instincts proved to be right.

"Gordon's alive?!"
