Fire and Ice

1983, Producers Sales Organization

As an aficionado of the fantasy artist Frank Frazetta as well as the animator Ralph Bakshi, I felt it was logical and exciting that they should collaborate on an animated fantasy film. The results, sadly, were somewhat disappointing. The story was bland and predictable, and the animation technically fell short of expectations, even though Bakshi relied on rotoscoping (tracing individual frames of live-action footage) to achieve more natural movement. Predictably, it was a box office flop, despite Bakshi's faithfulness to Frazetta's visual style—and that faithfulness is the reason I still have a soft spot for their progeny.
