The Theory of Everything

2014, Working Title Films

One might think, being the science junkie that I am, this would be in my Top Ten. Unfortunately, as gorgeous as the film is, I've read a bit too much about Stephen Hawking for my own good, and in reality he had a reputation for being a bit nasty around the edges. Understandably the film avoids this fact, but the result is too mushy for me to swallow. The other Big Problem I have is that the science takes a back seat to the romance; instead of Everything, or even Something, we get the Theory of Teeny Little Random Bits. This is not to suggest the film is awful; in truth, the science and romance are creatively blended with memorable images and transitions, and Eddie Redmayne is truly extraordinary; he simply isn't Hawking.
