Dark Star

1974, Jack H. Harris Enterprises et al

From the minds that spawned Alien comes a parody of 2001 that also skewers a bushel of other sci-fi films, some of them yet to be made. John Carpenter and Dan O'Bannon conceived and began filming it while they were students at the University of Southern California. The end product, which cost a whopping $60,000, played to mostly empty theaters; with its release on videocassette, however, it grew to become a cult classic.

It's said that O'Bannon was inspired to transform the clawed beach ball, which he'd noticed audiences failed to find funny, into one of the most terrifying aliens known to cinema.
