Cool World

1992, Paramount Pictures

The legendary animator Ralph Bakshi conjured a bizarre, slightly more adult version of Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and amazingly Paramount jumped on it. But despite the intriguing potential of giving Bakshi a big studio budget and new (for the day) technology, it utterly failed, even with the acting chops of Brad Pitt and the eye candy of Kim Basinger. Many of the background characters will look familiar to Bakshi fans, but they could hardly save a story one could charitably describe as a prolonged dirty joke with no punch line. At best, Cool World is a curiosity, of interest only to Bakshi's most devout followers.
