The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover

1989, Allarts et al

There's no question that Peter Greenaway has a singular style not suited to the taste of many; indeed, it takes a strong stomach to make it through what has been described by critics as raw, audacious and powerful. As long as you're not offended by violence, nudity and scatological references, you'll do OK. The hardest part for me to deal with, actually, was Michael Nyman's annoyingly repetitive score, which threatened to induce a migraine by the film's climax. Billed as a comedy, it's anything but funny.
