Chico and Rita

2010, Fernando Trueba PC

Here's a rarity: a feature-length adult animated film. Classic jazz of the 40s and 50s plays a major role in a heartbreaking story of love, loss, and reflection. The award-winning Spanish production features marvelous old-school 2D style animation, fine voice acting, and of course great music, mixing original material with that of Thelonious Monk, Cole Porter, Dizzy Gillespie and Freddy Cole. We need more sophisticated adult animation such as this, although its disappointing box office performance (it earned only 20% of its cost) sadly demonstrates why it remains relatively rare, whereas South Park and its ilk hold sway.
