John Carter

2012, Walt Disney Pictures

Although it was very nearly a box office disaster, I don't think it was as bad as some made out to be. It had a lot going for it, including spectacular visuals and some of the best CGI characters to hit the big screen. Taylor Kitsch didn't have quite the appeal needed to carry the film, but surprisingly the finely-animated, four-armed Tharks compensated, at least to some degree. Disney dumped as much as $350 million on John Carter; unfortunately, a meandering plot and uneven pacing worked against them, and they had to write down $200 million.
