Brainstorm is perhaps one of Hollywood's most troubled productions, due principally to Natalie Wood's untimely death near the end of shooting. Already in financial difficulty, MGM scrapped the project, forcing director Douglas Trumbull to file an insurance claim, rewrite the script and use Wood's sister for a few shots to finish it. Two years after Wood's death, the film finally hit a small number of screens in a limited release, and was consequently a financial disaster. The experience was so traumatic for Trumbull that he vowed never to direct again—all the sadder because Brainstorm is a breathtakingly beautiful film, with a superb performance by Louise Fletcher.
