The Black Hole

1979, Walt Disney Productions

When Black Hole was first released, I recall enjoying it quite a bit. But decades later, when it finally came out on disc, I had to wonder just what I saw in it. Aside from some excellent visual effects—all the more remarkable considering its vintage—it was actually embarrassing to watch. I had considerable difficulty trying to determine its target demographic: reasonably adult concepts and themes were photo-bombed by stuff for little kids. And the score by the great John Barry was the musical equivalent of a throbbing headache. It was Disney's biggest-budget film to date, and the first to carry a PG rating. That and five bucks will get you a cup of coffee—which would be much more enjoyable than the film.
