Although casting Tom Hanks as astronaut Jim Lovell may seem a little strange, Ron Howard puts any concern to rest with his masterful command of dramatic filmmaking. Based on the true story of the ill-fated Moon mission, this truly gripping film stands as perhaps one of the least Hollywood-ish true stories ever made. The real Jim Lovell (who makes a cameo appearance in the film) remarked of the nail-biting ending, "It was actually a lot scarier than that," indicating the margin for error was far smaller than what was portrayed.
