9

2009, Focus Features

Co-produced by Tim Burton—which kind of says something right there—9 straddles the fence between brilliant and just plan odd, with a convoluted story that's often indecipherable, leaving one with the sense of being as lost and confused as the protagonist. The visual style, populated predominantly by collages of found objects in macroscopic views, is vaguely reminiscent of the Quay Brothers, which could work for or against the film depending on one's tastes. It also suffers from a sense that substance was sacrificed to some degree for style. If nothing else, it makes for an interesting exploration of a very different approach to CGI. Oh, and it was released on 9-9-09. Too clever.
