1984

1984, Virgin Films et al

Much controversy surrounds what constitutes the proper final version of this film, as evidently there were numerous unauthorized alterations just prior to its release; in particular, the color saturation was adjusted, and the soundtrack significantly changed. In the end, it doesn't matter; the film is achingly brilliant no matter which version one sees, although I'm partial to the desaturated/Eurythmics edition. John Hurt is truly haunting as the tortured rebel, and Richard Burton evokes an uncomfortable blend of quiet menace and (big) brotherly love. Incidentally, this was Burton's final performance, and the film is dedicated to him.
