Sidebar: Disused Signal Bridge

This model, which appeared on the White River & Northern IV, is a heavily modified NJI kit, based on a real signal bridge that stood in Hopewell on the old Reading, now long since removed.

The first thing I did was make ladders, platforms and railing cages for signal access. I also made brass wire signal mounting poles and styrene bracketsóbut no signals. Next, I added etched brass handrails and ladders from Ratio Modelsóthese are the finest I've seen. Finally, I made a wooden deck for the top, just as on the real one, from stripwood.

All of the "metal" parts were sprayed sequentially with flat black and ruddy primer to simulate rusty painted metal. The wooden deck was weathered with India ink washes, and stained in spots with Rustall.
