Union & Phillipsburg

This variation on a kidney could be called a "peanut"—at a mere 20" X 37" it lives up to the name, yet it packs a lot of potential action. With no grades and no cut track pieces, it's an easy build. The space-expanding backdrop divider (thick blue diagonal line) is optional; leaving it out is recommended if you prefer not modifying structures to fit against it.

Notes on operation: Although two trains can be run simultaneously, it would be a challenge to do much switching with two trains on the layout, especially if you need to use a runaround. At a minimum, insulators would need to be installed at the two crossovers for two-train operation; however, using DCC would simplify wiring and operation.
