Tools: Steel Straightedge

There's only one way to make straight cuts: with a straightedge. But, as it is for so many modeling situations, one size doesn't fit all. Consequently, it's useful to have more than one.

Although I've accumulated quite a large collection of them over the years, you can get by with just a couple. Start with a long ruler—say, 18 or 24 inches—for cutting big stuff, and a little 6-incher for general modeling work. A third variety you'll find useful is a small L-square for making precise right-angle cuts; the Zona 37-434 (right) is perfect.

Note: Be sure to get steel rulers, not aluminum. A knife blade will easily ruin an aluminum ruler. That said, steel rulers will wear out over time; after many years of use, they won't be perfectly straight—I found that out the hard way, when I nearly ruined a couple of models and couldn't figure out why. They're not expensive, so just replace them every few years, and your modeling will remain precise.

Just getting started? The local craft store, such as Michael's, will have a good assortment. If one isn't convenient, then most any online hobby supply store, like eHobbies, will have what you need.
