HOW FAR CAN I PUSH THIS ENVELOPE?

Detailing has always been a passion, and just as I'd done with animation, I pulled out all of the stops. This was a time before fine detailing accessories began emerging on the market, so one had to get creative. A perfect example is this fire escape. Naturally the kit's escape was a big unsightly plastic blobby thing that had to go. But etched brass fire escapes had yet to appear, so I made do by cutting up dozens of etched brass windows and soldering the bits together, along with pieces of wire, ladders and fencing. (In a case of perfectly bad timing, Gold Medal Models began releasing some of their first kits just as I'd finished my kludge. But such is a modeler's life!)

Recently I opened up my archives and pulled out as many images as I had. But because this was back in the era before cheap digital cameras, photos were scarce, since film took time and cost money. There were enough, however, to populate a gallery; click the image above to open it.
