8.3. Grade Crossings

Back in the day, grade crossings were primitive, at best. You may or may not find any timbers in the gauge; also, you may or may not find any protection, i.e. signage or signaling. Although flashing lights were under development as early as the late teens, they didn't see widespread use until the late 1930s. Incidentally, the classic crossbuck design was inspired by the skull and crossbones symbol.
