2.1. Factory Powerhouse

Pola (now Faller) produced a suite of kits (260, 261 and 262) that together make up the "Kolb & Co" machine factory. I'd originally planned on including the complete complex on the layout, and in fact had even built and installed it.

However, when I rebooted the project in February 2021, I started having second thoughts. The complex seemed too urban for the layout, not to mention that it was shoehorned awkwardly into the space. So I bid it farewell, at least most of it; I kept the boiler house as a token reminder of the architecture.

The boiler house, seen above in its original spot, is now located where I'd planned to feature an abandoned single-stall enginehouse. However, between the two structures, I preferred the boiler house, plus it made more sense in the location. By 22 February 2021, the powerhouse was reassembled in its new location and dubbed the yard powerhouse.

Then on 11 March 2021 I had an epiphany: use walls from the now-disused kits as building flats to create an industrial complex, thus it reverted back to a factory powerhouse.

I've been using these semi-modular kits literally by the dozen for decades; they figured most prominently on my White River & Northern IV as the sprawling Rearden Metal Products plant, which spanned nearly a third of the layout. Photos below by Lou Sassi.
