3.11. Liberty Gas Supply

Ever since I was a kid, I had a fascination for gasometers, or gas storage tanks. Whilst digging through heaps of historic images of Jersey City, I happened upon this one:

Hot damn! It was the perfect excuse to purchase Cornerstone's Gas Storage Tank. But even though the model was quite small as gasometers go, I could only squeeze half of it on the layout. Even then, it was taller than any other structure, which made it appear too large, so I set the tank to the lower position, then sliced off the top layer of lattice. To eliminate the bulky railings, stairs and ladder, I used the "back" half of the tank, eliminating those details altogether. The base was pretty thin, considering gasometers are usually assembled on a concrete slab, so I simply laminated the two halves together.

By luck, the water tower and boiler house smokestack for Rearden Metal Products is nearby, sort of recreating the scene in the reference photo.
