3.1. Spano's Auto Service

Named for Rick Spano, my oldest friend and modeling mentor, the service station was inspired by the wonderful historic view below, which offers a glimpse into the everyday world of the past, right down to the Belgian block street. Notice the lack of a classic island for the pumps; everything is crammed right up against the sidewalk, with the pumps shoehorned into a sliver of space by the corner of the building. This was quite common.

I felt that a simplified version of the Cornerstone State Farm Supply would be a decent starting point. It took two kits to achieve what I'd set out to do: I needed brick on both sides of the façade because the roof wasn't going to be arched anymore, but instead flat; also, the columns had to be deeper because of the three roll-up doors. Those familiar with the kit will notice what I did to the front wall profile in order to emulate the building in the historic photo as much as feasible.
