4.12. Trestle

As was the case for the stone arch bridge and truss bridge, there was no way to make John Allen's iconic trestle other than to scratchbuild it. But because it had to fit into the scenery, it couldn't be built in advance. By the time could start it, I'd already enjoyed the success of the truss bridge, so I had complete confidence I'd ace it. The first step was to make paper templates of the bents, cut to fit the spaces.

After drawing the bridge and having it laser-cut, I pre-stained all of the parts.

Once I'd attached the bents to the stringers, I test-fit the bridge on the layout.

Next, I attached all of the cross-bracing and the footings, and test-fit again.

Then it was time for permanent installation.
