This reference image became cemented in my mind, and helped shape a corner on the layout that might otherwise have been relatively useless.
I modeled specific elements from the photo using loads of DPM leftovers.
This little guy was a lot of fun to bash, and I've made more of them for other layouts. The taller building isn't ultra-narrow; it's cut off by the edge of the layout.

If I ever get around to finishing the layout, I plan on recreating this scene in the alley between the buildings (complete with laundry, naturally):
