Swings

I'd started on a swing set back in the early 1990s with the intention of making a playground scene, and never finished it. Now I've finally checked that old round tuit off the list. It's the old school style: heavy steel tube A-frame, ten feet tall. I used the smallest brass tubing I could find for the frame, and fashioned the smallest bell cranks I've ever made from brass wire, bent and flattened.

Monofilament thread runs up the legs to the bell cranks, and rocker arms tug on the threads. The tricky part was splitting the horizontal tube across the top so that I could move individual swings. The swings themselves were made from etched brass seats, clipped from model ship railing stanchions, and beading needles for the chains.

The pair of swings moving in tandem wasn't planned; it was an accident owing to cutting the tubing in the wrong place.

The swings appear on the Saturday at the Park diorama.
