Episode 7: Shore Leave Part 2
SYNOPSISAzin's death plunges Dicker into an obsession to revive her, and no one believes he can do it. What happens if he succeeds? COMMENTARYThis one was a bitch to write. Early drafts were exposition-laden exercises in boring, repetitive crap. I kept having to go back through it to find some humor. What did seem to work was pitting Dicker and Dare against one another; a little conflict between good friends always heightens the drama. What also helped, I believe, was pulling Freke out of engineering and having him engage the others more. Hardcore Trekkers may recognize a line lifted directly from "Naked Time" when the captain argues with Spock about taking the risk of using an untested theoretical procedure. "We may go up in the biggest ball of fire since the last sun in these parts exploded..." Dicker is my Kirk, and I only wish I'd done this more often. The bittersweet ending I hope reminds people that the show has become a true dramedy. I happen to enjoy this sometimes uneasy mix very much, especially when it catches people off guard.
