Grump Central Archive: Week of 31 March 2019

Saturday, 6 April 2019

Three years ago I took the first delivery of lumber; that same afternoon I had a fair amount of the garage sill plates down. Today it's raining, the day after the well hookup ditch was finally finished. Figures.

Three years ago, the excavation and concrete contractors had just finished removing all of their equipment and supplies, and my property was empty for the first time in three months. Today, the trench from the well to the house is complete (the well, not yet drilled, would be almost dead center in the view above). I'm ready for the hookup—at least physically. Financially is another issue; it'll be another 4-5 weeks before I'm ready on that front. I just hope we don't have a lot of rain! Oops, spoke too soon, there are 2-3 days of solid rain in the forecast already...

Three years ago, I was busy working out the floor plan at full size on the foundation slabs. Today, I'm busy working out how to survive. Absolutely not what I expected I'd be doing back then; I imagined by now the house would be done and I'd be settling into comfortable retirement. Oh, how things can change...

Three years ago, it rained on my brand new foundation. Lately I've been feeling far too vulnerable for my own good as I sift through memories of my life. I've been doing my best to remember the better ones, and as I embark on a new modeling project, I'm reminded of some of those good times. Ironically, it's not the best way to keep one's spirits up, but it's also quite difficult to avoid thoughts of mortality at my station in life. Getting old sucks, but having memories sucks even more.

I'm so glad Monday is over; I've never liked April Fool's Day, and I'm not alone. What an utterly crass, senseless, stupid, counterproductive, and sometimes harmful or dangerous "holiday" that way too many people take way too seriously (sorry, even the most so-called "innocent" pranks are born out of malice). For what it's worth, Microsoft wants no part of it. So, can we please erase it from our collective cultural consciousness? I know I'm asking for too much, since people—particularly Americans, it seems—love to celebrate being stupid...

Monday, 1 April 2019

Given that it went from a high of 77° on Friday to a low of 31° last night, I thought the weather was being unusually wacky, until I checked what was going on last year at this time: it was unseasonably cold then, too, and about to snow. So I suppose I can't complain. But since I'm an old grump, I will anyway—especially since tomorrow night it's supposed to drop down into the 20s, and rain is predicted for Wednesday and Friday.

Sunday, 31 March 2019

The foundation was essentially done; the deck piers would be poured a few days later. Yesterday the weather was spectacular, with a high of 77. But wait: Sunday night it's supposed to drop below freezing. Give me a break.
