Grump Central Archive: Week of 28 July 2019

The last three days have been something like vacation days; I've done no work on the house, or much of anything else for that matter. No excuse or explanation for it, other than it being the sign of a depressed state. Just look at the state of the garage—it's an embarrassment. I could easily fix it, but I can't even bear to walk into it.

The closer I get to being quasi-done (livable while incomplete), the more I can't wait for things to actually be done—especially when it comes to getting my cats moved in with me. Yet I find it increasingly difficult to motivate myself each morning. Why is it the last few miles seem to be the very longest? It may be there are so many i's to dot and t's to cross that I get overwhelmed, but it's more likely because I don't have the financial freedom to simply get everything I need to wrap it up. All too often I'm overcome by a sense of dread that I won't see the house finished before I die. It's a kind of purgatory.

Wednesday was not especially constructive; some of the time was spent working with two young friends who are preparing to sell off an enormous chunk of my model collection in order to generate capital for the house. The rest was socializing and downtime. But downtime is important, too, otherwise I'd suffer burnout.

Three years ago today, the house looked like this. It's useful to remind myself of how far I've come. And, while I was digging through the archives, I did a quick inventory of the images I've taken of the house and property: excluding ~2,250 photos of my kitties, the file count is ~14,300. Yikes... And by the way, NOAA issued no heat warning yesterday, even though the heat index peaked at 102°.

Monday was largely down time. I did a bit more on my headboard, and tentatively tested door-hanging prospects, but that's about it. And it's been waaay to hot outside to do anything but check on my cats' air conditioner—it hit 91° in the afternoon (heat index of 97°). The psychosomatic reaction to the heat is amazing: even when it's a supremely comfortable 71° indoors, I feel listless.

Last night, for the first time in my home, I slept in a (nearly) finished bed. I got tired of the pillows resting against insulation, so I make a quick trip to Lowe's for some lumber. Managed to get it about three-quarters done in one day, including the finish work, with just some trim left to go. The bright spots are built-in reading lights.

Temps are creeping back up again, but the saving grace is that nights in the 60s, instead of the 80s. I'd like to be doing more, but my knee is quite cross with me at the moment.
