Grump Central Archive: Week of 28 June 2020

It ought to be one of the strangest Fourth holidays on record, what with most of the country still on some form of lockdown. No matter; it won't change my day one bit. In other news, the restored reviews have been well-received, and I've already added a dozen new ones, with another dozen in the works.

I understand I have a new regular reader. Welcome! An old regular from the UK recently lamented that he missed reading my film and TV reviews. Trouble is, I've actually lost friends over opinions I'd published online, so I removed them all. Granted, it was my political essays that caused the problems, so they shall never be restored; in retrospect, however, the film and TV reviews seemed relatively risk-free. So, for the entertainment of my regulars old and new, I present my newly-restored Grumpy Old Fart's Film & TV Reviews. It's been a couple of years since I've written any reviews, so there ought to be a bolus of new material forthcoming. Enjoy!

Yesterday afternoon we endured one of the most intense downpours I've ever witnessed. The rain came down so hard and fast that, at times, it shot off the edges of the roof out over the gutters in sheets. I went out in the storm three times to unclog the downspouts, with my umbrella threatening to collapse from the deluge, and the water shooting out from the drains below the deck began carving a new stream bed in the ravine. And it all started and stopped as suddenly as someone turning a spigot on and off. One minute it was sunny, then there was a loud thunderclap (Zack made a beeline for the bedcovers and crawled under), it turned black in 90 seconds, it poured heavily for twenty minutes, then it was gone just as quickly. Amazingly I never lost power.

I'm running out of steam. Not that I had all that much left to begin with, but I'm steadily losing interest in pretty much everything—modeling, house work, cooking, photography, film, reading... What's left? I feel like Zack: Make everything go away!

Over the weekend I exercised my cooking skills preparing Pig Bombs in my new smoker. I'd never smoked anything before, so that was an exciting new adventure, one I hope to repeat often in the future—especially since a headline from yesterday trashed my plans for Friday, and has probably doomed a great many restaurants: "Indoor dining in New Jersey postponed 'indefinitely', governor says." I'm beginning to hope the end comes sooner for me, because this virus is sucking much of the joy out of life: can't dine out, can't go tourist-town shopping, can't see family and friends... insert long string of obscenities here.

I still can't get over how different things look around here with the camper removed.

It would seem one of the pups from this year's litter is hanging around. What a beauty.
