Grump Central Archive: Week of 28 April 2019

Saturday, 4 May 2019

I was going to post a picture of my brand new toilet, then thought better of it; instead, here's a view of what was once a 45-foot long, 3½-foot deep trench, first started back in February, and backfilled in a matter of minutes on Thursday afternoon. Today I look forward to receiving the purple (waterproof) sheetrock for the bathroom, which will allow significant progress to take place. I also look forward to becoming more active again.

Houston, we have running water! The job went alarmingly smoothly—the well contractor was done in about two and a half hours, and even backfilled the trench gratis. Sometime today the toilet will be delivered, and tomorrow the bathroom sheetrock arrives. As Luke Skywalker once said, "They're coming in too fast!"

Today is the day for running water. I can honestly say that I'm psyched—probably more than I've been in years. The tank and whatnot will go in the corner of the garage, which was sheetrocked just for this occasion.

May is here, and so is a maxed-out green landscape. It's my favorite time of the year, saturated with my favorite color.

Running water is now on the way. With the kind and generous assistance of others, I finally have the capital to drop the pump and connect it to the house. And the septic system problem has been resolved. It all means a flush toilet is not far behind—and at long last I can lose the freakin' porta-potty, which has been on the freakin' property since freakin' 2015! (Yeah, I'm finally excited about something.)

We're headed into a solid week of rain, at least according to the forecasts. It may also be the week I get running water—assuming the well contractor is available, and able to do the work in the rain. If not this week, then definitely next. The only wrinkle: the septic contractor hasn't been out to repair the pump access, and isn't answering my calls. This has become a growing concern.

We're on track at the Wild Sanctuary for the greenest May Day on record—it's already as green as it was 1 May 2017 (spring was late last year owing to four consecutive Nor'easters), and we still have a few days left to go. And yes, I've dropped the Grump Central Weather Channel—it just seemed silly and pointless: it was impractical for me to maintain reports at consistent time intervals, so they were pretty much useless. I wouldn't make a very good meteorologist!
