Grump Central Archive: Week of 28 March 2021

Saturday, 3 April 2021

Yesterday was one of my worst days so far. The anxiety created by the feeling that I'll die at any minute is almost unbearable. It made me wish I would just die already—living like this is a form of torture. Then, what should happen in the midst of my misery: my oven was delivered, five days early—and they were kind enough to unbox it and bring it downstairs. It's great timing and lousy timing all at once: on the plus side, it's good that I got the woodwork done when I did; but I've not had the chance yet to line up help to heft the 250 pound behemoth into place, so who knows how long it's going to be sitting in the middle of my living room. Also, I felt so awful that I wasn't the slightest bit excited to see it.

I've spent the last two days finishing the woodwork for the oven area in the kitchen—which basically meant doing all of the remaining woodwork. (It was an excellent way to skip past yesterday, likely the most useless tradition of all time—April Fools.) To be perfectly honest, however, I don't like it. First, it's all pine, and I hate pine as a finish wood: the color is gross, it stains inconsistently, and it's a softwood, so it's easily damaged. But hardwood costs five to ten times as much, so it's not an option for me. And second, there's just sooo much of it! I hadn't foreseen it looking the way it does. Think it looks "nice"? Trust me, it looks way better in photographs than it does in person.

Part of me is regretting that I got the oven. Now I'm locked into a path that seems a bit overwhelming. And given the grim state of my health, I also wonder how much use it will get. But, what's done is done, so I may as well make the best of it.

This morning the lumber to complete the woodwork around the oven is arriving. It'll be a mad dash to complete it, since the oven is scheduled to arrive in exactly one week from today.

Monday was a perfect "work outside" day, so that's what I did. This is the "after" view of the front porch—the "before" view was a little embarrassing. This wood was originally all in the garage, by the way. Good exercise. In other news: I've pulled the trigger—an oven is on order and should arrive sometime during the first week in April.

After a high in the 80s last week, this week we can expect a low in the 20s. Yup, wacko weather is upon us.

Still here.
