Grump Central Archive: Week of 27 September 2020

Saturday, 3 October 2020

Early one thickly foggy morning, the mood was the very definition of eerie. I snapped it on 26 April 2015 from my camper window. The image was not manipulated—this is just the way it looked.

Pretty soon it will begin to look like this around here. Fall is a delight, but one that's entirely too brief: one minute there's a blaze of color, and the next, everything looks dead. I captured this image on the morning of 4 November 2016. Here are some more.

I'm not real big on winter, but it can be quite beautiful. I braved the cold around 11 AM on 5 March 2015 to catch the result of a snowstorm the night before. Incidentally, this was taken back when I had "real" photographic equipment, which included a Canon EOS 5D Mark III with an EF 35mm L-series II USM prime lens and a polarizing filter (which is why the sky is nearly black).

Around 6:00 AM on 14 May 2016, conditions were perfect for a spectacular woodland sunrise.

Taken 25 May 2015 at around 9:30 AM, this image reproduces one of the views in the property listing that drew me to the place in 2013. The fern along the driveway is simply magnificent.

It's "Favorites Week" at Grump Central. I'll be featuring images taken on my property over the last seven years that have remained in my "Best Of" list. Captured on 20 May 2015 around 6 PM, today's favorite is a view of the driveway roughly 500 feet from the house. For reasons I don't understand, to me that strip of green down the middle is the best aspect of the driveway—perhaps it's because it almost makes it appear disused and thus uninviting to strangers. Indeed, friends who were visiting me for the first time a few years back reached this part and started asking where in the hell they were ("Is this West Bumbleflock?") and expecting to see toothless banjo players on front porches...

Today's image was taken Friday morning through the kitchen window. Fog in the woods creates an ethereal effect.
