Grump Central Archive: Week of 27 January 2019

Saturday, 2 February 2019

The sheetrocking began yesterday; the first task (after helping the delivery truck get unstuck) was to move over 60 sheets of rock inside—while it snowed. The main living space ceiling is roughly half done.

Today sheetrocking the ceilings will begin. Once this is done, major work will stop until such time as I obtain more finances, as I will be tapped dry. The specter of the botched real estate deal rears its ugly head once again; it has well and truly ruined me, and I will be struggling to overcome it for the rest of my days.

The Polar Vortex is upon us! The night was brutal—for me, my critters, and my brand new heat pump (not to mention my wallet). Thankfully it won't last long; by Sunday it's supposed to be in the 40s again.

Time to batten down the hatches and prepare for a "polar vortex," another way of saying that it's going to get flipping cold: the low for tonight is supposed to be 4°! Yikes!

Tuesday, 29 January 2019

Yesterday was a "nothing-burger" day. Occasionally there are times when doing nothing is an accomplishment: it's simply not possible to be productive 100% of the time. Batteries must be recharged.

Monday, 28 January 2019

I have heat! It took over two hours to get the system balanced, but once things settled down, it ran like a champ. To help the HVAC contractor, I installed a thermocouple on the inbound refrigerant line to monitor its temperature. Worked like a charm. The real test comes on Wednesday night, when the low is predicted to be all of 6 degrees. (And the following Sunday is supposed to be in the 40s—how crazy is that?)

Sunday, 27 January 2019

Yesterday became a road trip: Pier 1 Imports had a sale on cool cheap plastic plates that I thought were perfect for deck and informal use, but each store only had a few, and they couldn't be ordered online, so I wound up going to three stores to collect enough. So, write that day off as pretty much a loss as far as the house goes. But if it's as nice as predictions claim it will be today, I'll be putting up more siding.
