Six years ago today I was just three weeks away from finishing my little guest cabin, unaware that I'd be living in it for the next three and a half years. This was not how things were supposed to go, but then that's pretty much been the story of my life.

Two years ago today I was buttoning up the house to get ready for my first winter here. Strange, if you'd have asked me how long I've been living in the house, I'd say just a few months; I can't recall seeing two winters pass here.

A dear friend was just diagnosed with melanoma. I am beside myself; we've been friends for 51 years. The Universe is a cold, cruel place.

Back to normal—that is, my "new normal." And back to being productive, hobby-wise, at least. I'm pleased to say that the model excavator I've been struggling with over the last week is now fully functional; all that remains to do is add a few cosmetic details and a coat of paint. If you're so inclined, you can read all about how this was accomplished.

If I'm right, I'm just starting to get over a case of food poisoning—the third one in as many years. The only thing I've had to endure that was worse was Lyme.
