Grump Central Archive: Week of 24 November 2019

Saturday, 30 November 2019

So the dinner party was a semi-success: two of the guests cancelled, and the rest arrived late. But aside from tons of leftover food, it was honestly for the better, since we could engage in much deeper conversation. And then it was over, altogether too quickly. Anyway, if nothing else, it served as a good "practice run" for future dinners. But having gotten up a 2 AM yesterday to start preparing, I'm beat.

Today is the day of my first "real" dinner party. I'm not ready, but no one else will know that except me, so I really need to chill. (Yeah, right.)

I wish all of my readers a happy, healthy and safe Thanksgiving. Rest assured that no turkeys were harmed at my household; instead, they safely roam my property regularly.

I can't believe tomorrow is Thanksgiving already. I do not feel prepared at all. At least Roy seems to be back to his old self, which is a huge relief for his grampaw—but not enough to save me from a debilitating wave of depression that got a real stranglehold on me yesterday: I spent most of the day in tears after receiving two back-to-back bad-news messages, one of which involved someone's sudden death. It's about as much as (if not slightly more than) I can bear. So, as wrong as it most certainly is, I find solace in a bottle. I know I need help, but I can't afford it. I've just got to muddle through.

Thankfully Roy appears to be on the road to recovery, which allows me to focus on getting prepared for the holiday; otherwise, I'd have had to cancel Thanksgiving dinner. Meanwhile, I've so much to do in so little time that I'm having a tough time prioritizing. At least the wood stove and accessories are ready, so bring on the cold.

Roy seems to be holding his own; hopefully nature will take a positive course and allow him to see his new home in about a week. But it sure doesn't do my blood pressure or nervous system any good having to deal with this, especially with Thanksgiving looming. Not to mention the issue with the Country Health Department, which has come to a complete standstill—it looks as though I won't be getting my TCO this year. Meanwhile, I've been staying warm with old wooden pallets and crates; plus, the combination of a fire and a sunset helps heal a battered soul.

I simply cannot catch a break. Ever. As soon as something goes right for me, something else goes terribly wrong, as if the Universe was determined to keep beating me down. I'd enjoyed my wonderful new wood stove for exactly 24 hours, when one of my cats became seriously ill. If he dies, it'll be a long road back for me. And just in time for the holidays, too!
