Grump Central Archive: Week of 21 April 2019

Changes in mid-stream can be seen above: before, with a shed roof on the middle level, left; after, with a gable roof, right. Note that I also added the window over the hallway stairs (a.k.a. The Canyon) at the same time. Today, I'm so very glad I did both. Below is a more detailed view taken on the 28th.

BTW, yesterday was a good test for my still-relatively-new roof, with nearly 3/4 of an inch falling in a matter of a couple of hours. It also helped justify my preference for deep eaves: mine are two feet, and I can leave my windows open during anything save perhaps for a 100-year hurricane.

No sooner had I begun framing the interior but the heavens opened up, turning the space into a shallow wading pool. It would be two and a half years before I had a proper roof to protect my home. Now whenever it rains, I still feel twinges of anxiety—like today.

Three years ago today, I was framing internal walls for the very first time. It included the coat closet and the beginnings of Kitty Central. Today, those spaces are nearly all sheetrocked.

Three years ago today the garage space was pretty much done, at least from the standpoint of being protected. But it wasn't watertight yet, and it poured the next two days, going right through the tarps I had on the roof and soaking absolutely everything. It was quite the mess.

Today some work is going to get done on the house for the first time in a while: the septic system contractor is coming to fix the access lid problem. This must be done to prepare for the well hookup next month. So maybe this will serve as the catalyst to getting back into it.

I'm starting to creep back out from my hidey-hole—but just a little, and tenuously at that. The weather yesterday drew me outside, although the coming week is predicted to be wet... dismally, seemingly perpetually wet. On the brighter side, here's a larger version of today's image, which will likely stand as a favorite for some time to come.

My favorite flowering tree, white dogwood, is out now, although sadly nothing like they've been in prior years. I fear they're dying off—along with the hardwoods—thanks to global warming.
