Grump Central Archive: Week of 18 November 2018

Saturday, 24 November 2018

Yesterday I was foolish enough to think I might accomplish something on the house when it was a whopping 15 degrees in the morning; ultimately, all I did was watch the roofers. Today Pella is supposed to install the big windows; we'll see if they can get it done before the predicted rain. Also, I'm supposed to be receiving the sliding glass doors from Lowe's, but given their no-show status on Wednesday, I'm not holding my breath.

Given the harsh environmental conditions yesterday, I spent most of Thanksgiving catching up on entirely too many old emails, paying bills, and consuming "special" eggnog to make the process less onerous. The roofers are expected to return today, although with a high of 32, I wouldn't blame them for bailing. Hopefully I'll be able to find out what happened to Lowe's wayward window shipment.

The predicted high for today is 27; the low, 12. Brrr! I'll be spending the day working on the house—or at least as much as I can tolerate, given the conditions. Many people express pity that 1) I'm working on a holiday, and 2) I'm not having dinner with anyone. Honestly, Thanksgiving is just like any other day to me. Indeed, I have no special expectations of any conventional holiday; they're only significant to those who make them so.

I was mistaken: Lowe's windows are arriving today, not yesterday. But then yesterday I learned that Pella will be making a surprise early delivery of the big windows today; installation is tentatively set for 24 November—the same day I should receive the sliding glass doors. It never rains, but it pours. Meanwhile, the second level of the roof is done, save for the trim and ridge cap.

Tuesday, 20 November 2018

After a two-plus year wait, I'm getting a roof! It may take a week or more to complete, but even unfinished, it's a thing of beauty. Also, the first wave of windows should be arriving today, so it's going to be seriously busy 'round here.

Monday, 19 November 2018

The weather grows increasingly uncooperative. Rain is predicted for tonight and into tomorrow—slowing down the roof—and the high for Thanksgiving is supposed to be 32, with the low in the teens. This is not conducive to getting things accomplished. That said, one good thing that has been accomplished was transferring the cabin from temporary to permanent electric service. I'm no longer running on a ridiculously long extension cord!

Sunday, 18 November 2018

Still no first wave of windows, and no word on a rescheduled delivery date. But in the grand scheme of things, it's no longer as critical as it once was, since so many other puzzle pieces won't be ready. At least the roof is going on next week, and when that's done, I'll breathe a huge sigh of relief.
