Grump Central Archive: Week of 17 December 2017

Saturday, 23 December 2017

It's raining. The holidays are nigh, and I'm often asked what I do for Christmas; I answer, the same things I do any other day. Some people express sadness or regret for my not spending the day with family or friends. But the 25th for me is just another day of the year; likewise for New Year's. I'm not sad or lonely, and I don't mind being alone. I've never thought of any holiday as being special in any way. Besides, they were established by other people. We should each create our own special days to celebrate—that way they'll have true personal meaning.

Counting down to the end of the year—just over a week remaining. What will 2018 bring, aside from the tendency to write the wrong date on checks?

Thursday, 21 December 2017

Welcome to the Winter Solstice, shortest day of the year. Finally, we begin the procession toward longer days in Earth's eternal dance around the Sun. Now that Hanukkah has concluded, the lines of communication may at last reopen; then again, Christmas follows right on its heels, leaving the lawyers only a few days to come to terms. I don't see it happening.

My "Little Guy" isn't so little any more—in fact, Bobby's gotten downright fat. That's OK; he helps keep me sane in an insane world.

Car is much better. I am much poorer. I may do without a new computer chair—even though it's the only chair I currently own. I feel like the weather: grey and dreary, and it's supposed to stay this way for the remainder of the week, with rain on the weekend. I anticipate a frenzied period of negotiations toward the end of next week as the property buyers attempt to work around my demands (really, my needs), and I predict 2018 will begin with little to no chance of progress. I hope I'm wrong.

No pizza yesterday. Car broke down while I was out shopping, and barely made it home; naturally it happened on a Sunday so I couldn't get it serviced right away. Today's mission, then, will be to see how much it'll cost to get it back in proper working order—assuming it'll make it to the shop. Adding insult to injury, my computer chair broke, so when my car is repaired, I need to go spend more money. And today marks the first day of the last two weeks remaining to sort out the property sale. Radio silence continues.

The cold snap is over, and we're headed for the 40s, so this stuff should be gone by the end of the day. Today is shopping day; maybe I'll treat myself to pizza.
