Grump Central Archive: Week of 16 February 2020

Back in 2017, things were looking kinda grim 'round here. Today, things are looking up—well, for the house, anyway. Me, that's a horse of a different color. I regret that my readers will be subjected to a barrage of dark, pithy, philosophical posts for the foreseeable future. I apologize. But when faced with one's own mortality, it's almost unavoidable.

The official verdict is in: I have congestive heart failure. They couldn't give me an estimate on how much time I have left, but statistically I won't make it past five years. This will force me to make some hard choices about things I hadn't even considered before. But it will take me a while to process it all.

Today it will be a challenge to keep my sh!t together. That's all I can say right now.

No one has ever published a roadmap plotting the best course for people facing a diverse set of grim circumstances such as mine. I know I'm most likely making mistakes, but who could possibly tell me what I should do if no one has ever been in my shoes? At any rate, the Medicare issue is resolved (surprisingly quickly and painlessly), so I'm on track to get the medical attention I desperately need right now... starting sometime today.

Now, in addition to dealing with the insanity of the septic system, I'm dealing with the insanity of the Medicare system, as I'm getting conflicting information from different representatives of the same organization. (There are parallels to be drawn here, but I'll allow the reader to draw them.) I'm so very thankful for the relative sanity of cats.

It's not Sarcoidosis, as I've been claiming for the past couple of months. It's something else, something much more serious. I'll be seeing a doctor this week.

Sunday, 16 February 2020

The end of the day Friday brought what should be good news, assuming I believed a word of it. I've been assured by the septic engineer that he'll be receiving the fill material certification from the builder early next week; I've also been assured that the certification obviates the need for any further testing. Would anyone blame me for being highly skeptical? Meanwhile, Friday night was the coldest so far this season: 12°, while the high yesterday briefly peaked at 33°. I've had a fire going continuously for over 36 hours now, and the heat pump has never come on. My kids have certainly been enjoying it!
