Grump Central Archive: Week of 13 January 2019

Late start today—it was a sleepless night in pain. The insulation inspection passed with flying colors, leaving me free to begin sheetrock, although I do not yet have an estimate for getting the ceilings done professionally, and I'm in no physical condition to do work of any kind right now. The weekend will likely be unproductive while I recover from the insulation push, gather my wits to figure out what to do next, and also prepare for the impending storm.

If the ground isn't frozen yet, it will be by next week: Sunday night's low is supposed to be 10°, Monday's high 15°, followed by a low of 8°. Crap... there goes any hope of connecting the well before Spring. And with 3-4 inches of snow predicted for the weekend, it's unlikely the HVAC guys will be out to get the heat pump working properly by then. But... the insulation is done—none too soon—and inspection takes place this afternoon. Fingers crossed...

Unpleasant weather is on its way: it's predicted that Saturday's impending storm will bring precipitation of some form to every state in North America. That's quite a statistic!

With my helper due to arrive today, perhaps I'll start getting things accomplished again, although I did piddle around some yesterday—as much as my body could tolerate.

Nothing accomplished yesterday aside from recovering from my fall. But day two post-fall is worse than day one, and I can barely move. Meanwhile, the heat pump failed, but through no fault of the installers; it's just too cold to get it properly balanced. They'll keep working on it until it's right.

Heat pumps take a lot of "fiddling" to get working right, especially when it's really cold outside. So, although the system appears to be working properly, I won't know for sure until it gets just a little warmer outside. It figures that mine was installed on one of the coldest days of the year so far! In other news, I took a fall yesterday—I missed the last step on the way down a ladder and landed flat on my back on concrete. I felt almost no pain at the time, but today I really know something bad has happened. (That's in addition to the abuse my hands regularly suffer.) So I probably won't be doing all that much for the next few days.

Will I get heat today, or will the snow preempt it? But even if it's postponed, I know now that the house won't freeze: yesterday morning, while it was 19° outside, it was 52° inside. Incidentally, today's image is yesterday's sunrise, taken from my foyer.
