Grump Central Archive: Week of 10 June 2018

I'm very much looking forward to volunteering today, as it will distract me from recent events, and the ominous radio silence that's followed.

The saying that "things have to get worse before they get better" is the very definition of my life—except I'm missing the "get better" part at the moment.

Wednesday was a bad one. Really, really bad. I was served another summons regarding the commercial property sale; this one holds me responsible not only for turning over the property to the plaintiff, but also for paying hundreds of thousands in interest, fees, costs, penalties and sums that remained unpaid by a whole raft of other David Smiths across the state. In the age of instant information, why is it that legal and official entities can't be bothered to verify which David Smith is involved? Sure, it's easy enough for me to prove they're not me, but a) I shouldn't have to, and b) it will cost me money to do so. And assurances from both lawyers that everything would be fixed failed to assuage my fears. I was mere millimeters away from a total meltdown; I'm still pretty close.

Tuesday was unquestionably the most beautiful day of the year so far: 71 degrees with crystal clear skies and gentle breezes. But it was difficult to enjoy, as my mind was otherwise occupied. The buyers' urgency to close seems to have cooled, likely because I refused to let them renege on the tax situation. For once I have the upper hand—but it comes at a price: my mood is rapidly sinking as radio silence resumes and Sarcoid tightens its grip on my throat. And today it's supposed to rain.

Strange Mondays. A week ago, I'd made the trek out to the NJ MVC to get my driver's license renewed; I arrived to find them turning everyone away because their computer system was down. So I ventured back to the MVC yesterday morning, only to find their system was down again. What are the chances of me picking two random days out of the year and hitting the MVC during a computer outage both times? And from there the day got stranger: stopping at the CVS for a med refill, I arrived at a parking lot full of emergency vehicles—evidently someone had a heart attack in their car. And then my check engine light popped on, and my car wound up back the shop once more. Oh, and it was yet another day of radio silence. That was my Monday. How was yours?

The buyers seem to behave as if waving the carrot of closing under my nose somehow excused them from fulfilling a number of contractual obligations. As anxious as I am to close, I'm not letting them off the hook. I've waited three years for this; I can wait another month or so for them to make good on their responsibilities. I refuse to clean their diapers. Meanwhile, the acute stress I've been enduring has triggered a Sarcoidosis attack. Oh, and it's pouring rain.

The stray that Bobby has befriended is showing up more and more often; now s/he's here for breakfast every day, and sometimes dinner, too. And s/he's gradually becoming less skittish, although I think it will be quite a long time yet before I can approach the little cutie. I'll need to buy more food...
