Grump Central Archive: Week of 10 March 2019

Saturday, 16 March 2019

My friend's goddaughter passed during the night, eliminating the need to travel. So, we spent the afternoon and evening together. Simply spending time with a friend is often an effective way to heal. A high near 73° also helped.

The predicted high for yesterday was off by wide margin, as it peaked at 71° around 2:30 PM. Today is going to be a challenging day. The goddaughter of a good friend went into the hospital last night, and was soon pronounced brain dead. I offered to drive him to the hospital this morning (about two hours away) so he can deal with the problem in good company.

Surprisingly, yesterday played out exactly as I'd hoped—normally my days will make a right-angle turn at some point (which is to say my "slave labor" didn't find any human remains as they dug). Here's hoping today goes as well, although the only thing on the schedule is more digging. That, and a high of 60°. Yum.

With the foundation walls finished, the crew packed up all of the forms and cleaned out the work area, leaving behind a solid concrete labyrinth. Three years later, I'm cleaning out my surplus model stuff—I hope to get rid of as much as 90% of it. Today is going to be busy: while I'm sorting and organizing some special items for a visiting collector, my helpers will be digging in the muddy well hookup trench. Plus, a well service will be showing up to do an estimate for the pump and hookup.

Three years ago today the foundation walls were done—look at all of that concrete! Yesterday, meanwhile, was the nicest day of the year so far, and yet I accomplished virtually nothing. I've yet to figure out how to snap myself out of this funk.

Back in 2016, the concrete was poured and the forms would soon be coming off to reveal the finished foundation. Now I'm doing my best to use this retrospective to inspire some progress today. It remains to be seen if it's working.

This day three years ago was a landmark day: the foundation forms were completed, and concrete was being pumped into it. The pumping started around noon and took about three hours. It was an amazing process, with a row of 6-8 concrete mixers waiting in line along the driveway.
