Grump Central Archive: Week of 9 December 2018

Saturday, 15 December 2018

Yesterday was a mixed bag: I got the garage door installed—yay. But I was tormented the entire afternoon by telemarketing calls—at least a dozen of them were from one source alone trying to sell me insurance—some of the calls came in within one or two minutes of each other, and continued right through dinnertime. And a few of the other calls I received were evidently from overseas companies that assumed I spoke their language, as recordings greeted me in Chinese. Honestly, if it weren't for the fact that a phone is a vital necessity in life, I'd ditch it in a heartbeat.

The weather is supposed to turn crappy this weekend, so any work I do will be indoors. If I do any; maybe I'll take a break. We'll see.

The garage door is due to be delivered today. I'm somewhat excited by this—I've always wanted to install one, and it means the house finally gets buttoned up... my enormous house that's a bear to heat. (I've been spoiled by the fact that I can keep my cabin quite toasty with just one tiny space heater.) Meanwhile, Pella called to say the two replacement windows wouldn't be ready until sometime in January. Honestly, ask me if I care any more.

Today my helper will be showing up to install more insulation. But he does much more than manual labor; he keeps me working, as I might otherwise just sit around feeling sorry for myself, especially as the cold offers a perfect excuse to do so.

Despite having a kerosene heater and several electric space heaters on hand, progress with the house is achingly slow—it feels as though I'm trying to heat a supermarket with a candle. I'm encouraged by the fact that the ground is not yet frozen, but unfortunately it's not something I can exploit just yet, given the present budget of nearly zero.

Exactly one year ago today I began my daily Grump Reports with the above image (while the reason for doing so remains something of a mystery). I'm grateful it isn't as white this year—as well as the fact that the commercial property sale nightmare is over. That said, the sale gave rise to another new nightmare, so things haven't improved much: still living in the cabin, and still uncertain when I can move into my home.

Saturday I was volunteering, so nothing was accomplished. Just as well, as I might have just sat around at home feeling sorry for myself.
