Grump Central Archive: Week of 9 June 2019

Friday was spent preparing for the delivery of my new washer and dryer (which arrived around 1 PM), installing them, and then using them. Or, trying to. Unfortunately, I got a lemon. And based on some online research, this is not Whirlpool's best model... indeed, it may be their worst. My mistake for not doing due diligence. Now these will need to go back, and the process starts all over. Here I was all excited to have clean clothes, and all I got was a bunch of grief (and a basket full of sopping wet underwear). Like I need any more of this nonsense!

It never rains, but it pours—literally and figuratively. Yesterday the heavens opened up for the first half of the day. Then I learned that a new washer and dryer are on the way. So I know what I'll be doing today: installing them. I'll have to do it twice, since the walls aren't even sheetrocked yet. But these are the kinds of problems I prefer having! Meanwhile, when my helper arrived this week he said, "Dayam, it's starting to look like a house." That felt really good.

Yesterday my "slave labor" returned after a week away and I immediately set him to task filling in the pit around the well head, which had to be left open until the County Health Department inspected it. Actually, owing to a lack of internal communication at the County, they wound up inspecting it twice. Your tax dollars at work...

Tuesday was a Jekyll-and-Hyde day, starting off with pouring rain and then quite suddenly turning gorgeous. How could I not take advantage of perfect weather? Meanwhile, Social Security is being capricious with their payment dates, which is wreaking havoc with my budget...

Well, now I'm really paying the price for doing so much work on the house Sunday, although it comes as no surprise. Any illusions of continuing with more of the same Monday were shattered, as much by the weather as by my aching back. At least I could admire my progress between downpours. Anyway, as it happens I spent the better part of the day trying to resolve a cell phone service technical issue—not what I consider productive, but absolutely necessary.

I just discovered that Google Maps has finally added my driveway—the whole thing from end to end. It's only been here for at least 50 years. Strangely, none of the driveways that branch off of the main private drive are there, just mine. I can't decide if this is a good thing or not, but I'm leaning towards not. As it is, I'll get one or two "lost" people per year trying to figure out where the road goes, even though they pass a half-dozen "No Trespassing" and "Private Drive" signs along its half-mile length. Meanwhile, my house isn't on the map yet (top left corner), even though all of my neighbors' houses are, and I think that's probably a good thing. I prefer, after all, to remain anonymous.

The herniated disc in my neck is becoming very unhappy with all of the work I've been doing, so unfortunately I need to dial it back—and just when I was on a roll. Getting old really sucks. And yet, today promises to be really nice, so we'll see what I can accomplish.
